Jonah Rockwell & Mary Higgins
Two brothers marry two sisters
Jonah Rockwell, b. ca. 1740 in Wilton, CT married Mary Higgins in 1766. Jonah’s brother John married Mary’s sister Miriam.
Jonah and Mary moved to Fairfield, just east of Wilton. Jonah served in the local militia, eventually reaching the rank of Lieutenant. He may have served during the French and Indian War, and the Revolutionary War, but records aren’t clear.
In a petition dated 16 May 1776 at Fairfield, Jonah and thirty other soldiers addressed Governor Jonathan Trumbull about their concerns in regard to the company’s ensign, Michael Lockwood of Fairfield. They stated that he was working against the American cause, trying “to discourage persons from going into the service of the United Colonies” and “has refused to go himself…” I have been unable to ascertain what became of this, but it does make clear what side of the conflict he was on..
Mary died ca. 1777, and Jonah married again, in 1778 and yet again in 1797. He died around 1823.
